the FAQ was updated in the past week
http://guildwars.com/products/guildwars2/gw2faq/
Will there be a subscription fee for Guild Wars 2?
Nope. Like the originalGuild Wars, there will be no subscription fee for Guild Wars 2. You just buy the game and play it online without paying a monthly fee.

Will Guild Wars 2 be an MMO?
Yes. Guild Wars 2 provides a massive, online persistent world.

How is Guild Wars 2 different from other MMOs?
While Guild Wars 2 adds a persistent world, it retains the unique nature of the original game including a strong narrative, extensive instanced gameplay, an anti-grind design philosophy, and strong support for competitive play.

Will Guild Wars 2 have non-human playable races?
Absolutely! In addition to humans, players will be able to create, customize, and play asura, charr, norn, and sylvari characters.
* The conquerors of Ascalon, the charr are ferocious, warmongering creatures—the intractable foes of humanity. Now, as greater dangers threaten their conquests, the charr legions marshal their war machines to meet their enemies with deadly force.

* The norn are half-giant brawlers from the frigid northern lands who can shapeshift into mighty bestial forms. They've been driven from their homeland by a force beyond reckon, and now regroup among the lost dwarven ruins of the Shiverpeaks.

* The asura, who once ruled the caves and tunnels below Tyria, are an advanced race of small stature and large intellect. Having emerged from the depths, the asura aim to rule the surface world with their powerful golems and razor-sharp wit.

* Not much is known of the sylvari, save that they are a race of sentient plant-beings, newly blossomed into the world. They are the youngest of the races, and are bound together by a common dream.

How will character progression work? Will you be raising the level cap?
Guild Wars 2 will have the kind of extensive character advancement appropriate to a persistent world RPG. It is our priority to avoid forcing players into the grind-based gameplay that too often accompanies a high level cap.

Also, to allow players the freedom to play together even if their friends are at a much higher (or lower) level, we are planning to implement a strong sidekicking system, similar to that used in City of Heroes.

We're applying this same philosophy to competitive play. Players will be able to engage in organized, balanced PvP (similar to GvG in the original Guild Wars) without needing to first level up characters, find equipment, or unlock skills. While inside the organized PvP area, all characters will be the same power level and will have access to the same equipment.

Will Guild Wars 2 be solo-able?
Yes. You will be able to advance your character to the maximum level without ever joining a group if you so desire. Most content will be designed in a solo-friendly way, though often with mechanisms for scaling up in difficulty when more players are involved. This will give players the option to experience the game whichever way they prefer.

At the same time, it is important for an MMO community to join together to overcome challenges. There will also be some areas in the game that require a coordinated group effort.

Can I play my original Guild Wars character in Guild Wars 2?
Because Guild Wars 2 is a whole new game with different professions and races, new technology, and expanded gameplay, it would not be possible to directly use an original Guild Wars character.

However, your original Guild Wars character names will be reserved for your use in Guild Wars 2. In addition, Guild Wars 2 recognizes the accomplishments commemorated by your original Guild Warscharacters in the Hall of Monuments and provides you with unique rewards to showcase those achievements.

What are the system requirements for Guild Wars 2?
The system requirements haven't been finalized, but just as with the original Guild Warsseries, we're committed to creating a beautiful game that will play great on mid-range gaming PCs.

When is Guild Wars 2 going to be released?
When it's finished. Seriously though, we haven't announced a specific release date yet, but when we do you can get those details and more right here on the official website

When will there be a beta?
Although we publically alpha- and beta-tested the original Guild Wars while it was still in early development, with Guild Wars 2 we will commence beta testing closer to the game's release.

With that in mind, we will not start beta testing in 2008 as we had originally planned. Guild Wars 2 is a very large and ambitious game, and Guild Wars players rightfully have very high expectations of its quality. We want players to be absolutely blown away by the game the first time they experience it.

old news but worth mentioning
http://bnsfacts.wordpress.com/2008/09/1 ... to-ncwest/
NCsoft Announces Formation of “NC West
CEO Taek Jin Kim Promotes Chris Chung, Jeff Strain, David Reid, and Patrick Wyatt

SEOUL, Korea, Sept. 10, 2008—NCsoft ® Corporation (KSE: 036570.KS), the world’s leading publisher and developer of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), including award-winning franchises Lineage®, Guild Wars® and City of Heroes®, today announced the formation of “NC West™”.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of NCsoft with operating responsibility for western regions including the US and Europe,
NC West will be led by Chris Chung as CEO,
Jeff Strain as president, product development,
David Reid as president, publishing, and
Patrick Wyatt as CTO as well as yet unannounced European executives.

Jeff Strain was formerly the president and co-founder of ArenaNet, a company he formed with Patrick Wyatt and Mike O’Brien when they left senior roles at Blizzard Entertainment in 2000. Additionally, Strain held the position of executive producer of Guild Wars 2™ prior to taking this new role. Strain will report directly to Chung and manage all NC West development studios across all existing and future products. Strain will also direct the production of NCsoft’s Asian-developed titles for NC West territories.

David Reid began with NCsoft in March 2008 as vice-president, marketing for North America. Reid came to NCsoft from Turner Broadcasting’s GameTap, where he served as vice-president, marketing. Prior to that, he worked at Microsoft as director of global platform marketing, where he launched the Xbox 360. In his new role, Reid will continue to report to Chung and will lead franchise management, marketing, public relations, sales, and customer support for NC West.

As a founder of ArenaNet, Patrick Wyatt led the development of the network and server technologies for the Guild Wars franchise, and directed the architecture and deployment of ArenaNet’s global game network infrastructure. Before co-founding ArenaNet with Strain and O’Brien, Wyatt was the vice president of research and development for Blizzard Entertainment, where he led programming for the Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo franchises. As CTO for NC West, Wyatt will report to Chung and will focus on platform technology development, network operations, and systems engineering.

I'd honestly rather see MMOGs come out when they're done rather than being rushed, so that's not too bad a thing.

new GW2 preview at Eurogamer
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/guild ... -preview_4
Guild Wars 2's switch from an almost entirely instanced game-world, where you would adventure with only your party members, to a persistent, fully-populated one like those in more conventional MMOs, is the driving force behind most of the changes in the gameplay.

The quest system, for instance, has been completely overhauled, and will offer something quite different from its competitors.

"I think I can safely say that you won't see a single exclamation mark floating above a character's head in Guild Wars 2," claims lead designer Eric Flannum.

Hmm... I liked the instanced nature of GW. Pity they're getting rid of it, imo.

I definitely like how pvp works in GW (best MMOish pvp I've seen) so I hope they at least keep that instanced. As far as pve goes, I wasn't a big fan of how everything was instanced. I like seeing other people running around and adventuring with me, not just in town.

more on combat
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/04 ... ing-fires/
In Guild Wars 2, for example, the first half of your skill-bar is determined by what you’re holding in your hand. So if I’m a warrior and I have a sword and a shield and then I switch to a great sword, my first five skills which change to reflect to show that I have a greatsword now. Those aren’t skills you drag to your skill-bar – they’re skills which are determined by your profession and what you’re holding. That way we’re sure that people have at least basic, useable skills which they can build on top of. The second 5 are ones you can slot yourself, and enhance your basic functionality.

RPS: Extrapolating from what you’ve said on the blog though, there’s still a structure there.
Of the five remaining, one is a high-power ability slot, another is a healing slot which leaves three which you have something like total freedom with.

Eric Flannum: One of the things we did was dedicate one of the slots to what we call an Elite Skill – which is a super-powerful one. And one to a healing skill. But even in those categories you have a choice, based upon your class and your profession.
Combat, part 2
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/part-two/
There are eight professions in Guild Wars 2, many of which will be familiar to fans of Guild Wars, as well as a few professions new to the Guild Wars world. Each of these professions is roughly categorized by the type of armor they wear: scholars wear light armor, adventurers wear medium armor, and soldiers wear heavy armor. Currently there are three scholar professions, three adventurer professions and two soldier professions.

GW2: no dedicated healer
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/t ... -More.html
Gameplay:

Will there is a class that will be better able to heal his allies? A type class trainer?

Well, I can say that no profession is known healer in Guild Wars 2. We will disclose more professions and skills in time. However, we can say that certain professions have a better affinity for the support and care of its other allies.
A New Way of Looking at Healing and Death
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/c ... ing-death/
We keep hearing other MMO developers espousing the "holy trinity" of DPS/ heal/tank with such reverence, as if this is the most entertaining combat they have ever played. Frankly, we don't like sitting around spamming "looking for healer" to global chat. That feels an awful lot like preparing to have fun instead of having fun.

Instead of the traditional trinity, every Guild Wars 2 profession is self reliant--not only can they all help each other by reviving in combat, but all professions have ways to build their characters differently to make them more versatile for group play.

Ultimately, DPS/heal/tank just didn't cut it in our book...er, game. Our players demand more from Guild Wars 2 and we intend to deliver on that demand instead of delivering more of the same. Not only is the trinity very formulaic, but it leaves out a lot of gameplay elements that make many other games so much fun.

info about WvWvW pvp

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World_versus_World

http://guildwars.incgamers.com/forums/s ... ?p=5694718
buffed: You mentioned world PvP, could you explain that quickly?

Peters: Sure, the idea is to call all worlds (that is servers) once a week to a large battle. The time interval might still change. For three servers at a time one area will be generated - right now we got four different giant battlefields - in which you fight over strategic points like fortresses, watch towers and sawmills.

buffed: Doesn't that mean that alliances between two sides will form to dispatch the third?

Peters: Well, that's possible, but there are no means of direct communication between the servers. But that's exactly the reason why we chose three sides for PvP. If one side dominates the other two can cooperate with unspoken agreement. If one of the weaker sides becomes the strongest then the alliances might change again. It just doesn't make much sense if 200 players from server A conquer everything and the 30 players that server B and C can bring each are even fighting among each other.
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/guild-wars-2/1165160p1.html
This form of PvP features a massive war between three different worlds (what you might call servers or shards in other games), across four large maps. These maps are available all the time, and don't have player limits, so it's possible to have battles involving hundreds of players at a time. The game involves capturing and holding keeps and other strategic locations, and plays out like a giant strategy game where each player is an individual participant.
